Historical Background

The term "lupus" (Latin for wolf) was first used by the medieval physician Rogerius in the 13th century to describe erosive facial lesions. Moritz Kaposi distinguished the systemic form from the purely cutaneous disease in 1872. The LE cell phenomenon was discovered by Malcolm Hargraves in 1948, and the antinuclear antibody (ANA) test was developed in the 1950s, transforming diagnosis.
