What is GERD?

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic condition in which stomach acid or bile flows back into the esophagus, irritating its lining. This backflow, known as acid reflux, can cause symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation. If left untreated, GERD can lead to more serious complications.

Historical Background

Gastroesophageal reflux disease was first described as a clinical entity in the 1930s and 1940s by Asher Winkelstein, who in 1935 linked esophageal mucosal damage to peptic acid exposure. The introduction of flexible endoscopy in the 1960s and the development of proton pump inhibitors in the 1980s by scientists at Astra AB (now AstraZeneca), led by Ivan Ostholm and later commercialized as omeprazole, transformed GERD diagnosis and treatment.
