Parkinson's Disease

What is Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects movement. It occurs when nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine become impaired or die, leading to motor symptoms and other complications.

Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease

Symptoms typically develop gradually and can vary between individuals. They include:

Non-Motor Symptoms

Parkinson's can also cause non-motor symptoms, such as:

Historical Background

Parkinson's disease was first formally described in 1817 by English surgeon James Parkinson in his essay "An Essay on the Shaking Palsy." French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot later refined the clinical description in the 1870s and named the condition after Parkinson. The discovery of dopamine's role in the disease by Arvid Carlsson in the late 1950s was a landmark achievement that led to levodopa therapy.
