Arrhythmia

What is Arrhythmia?

Arrhythmia is a condition characterized by an irregular heartbeat, which can be too fast (tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia), or erratic. It can affect the heart's ability to pump blood effectively.

Prognosis

The prognosis for arrhythmia depends on the type and underlying cause. Many arrhythmias are manageable with treatment, allowing individuals to lead healthy lives.

Historical Background

Cardiac arrhythmias were first systematically described by Dutch physiologist Willem Einthoven, who invented the electrocardiogram (ECG) in 1903 and received the Nobel Prize in 1924 for this work. His recordings allowed physicians to identify and classify abnormal heart rhythms for the first time.
