Muira Puama — Benefits Deep Dive
Muira puama is sold as "potency wood," an Amazonian aphrodisiac and nerve tonic with more than a century of reputation behind it. This deep dive takes each of its claimed benefits seriously enough to examine properly — and the examination has to begin somewhere unusual, because "muira puama" is a trade name rather than a botanical one.
At least three names are in play. Ptychopetalum olacoides is the species usually intended and the one behind essentially all the modern pharmacology. Ptychopetalum uncinatum circulates in the same trade under the same common names. And Liriosma ovata appears throughout the older pharmacy literature as the botanical source of the same commercial article. The traded material is chipped or powdered bark and root-wood — the hardest botanical material of all to identify once processed — moving through a wild-harvest supply chain with almost no authentication anywhere in it.
That is not a technicality to be cleared away before the interesting part. It is load-bearing. Every claim below is a claim about a specific plant producing a specific chemistry, and where the plant is uncertain the claim inherits the uncertainty. Worse, the usual reassurance does not help: a marker-compound assay is a potency check, not an identity check, and muira puama's commonly assayed constituents are pan-plant compounds that could not distinguish one candidate species from another. So the honest reading of an identity problem runs the opposite way from the one you usually see — it does not clear the plant, it indicts the product.
What follows is an attempt to be genuinely useful about a herb whose evidence is thin, without either dismissing it or inflating it. Two findings are worth flagging before you start, because they are the ones most likely to change how you read everything else. First, the libido claim — the reason nearly everyone arrives — has no adequate human evidence at all, and that is absent evidence rather than refuted evidence. Second, and more surprisingly, this plant's best science has nothing to do with the claim it is sold on: there is a coherent, multi-year body of preclinical neuropharmacology on acetylcholinesterase inhibition, memory and stress, which maps onto the traditional "nerve tonic" description far better than onto the bedroom.

The plant's strongest science, and it is not about sex. Acetylcholinesterase inhibition in cognition-relevant brain regions, memory retrieval in aged mice, neuroprotection in brain slices, antidepressant-like and anti-stress profiles, an Alzheimer mouse model. All preclinical, all from one research programme. Includes the dose arithmetic with its assumptions printed, and the unresolved contradiction between "anxiogenic" and "anti-stress."
Muira Puama: Dose, Formulations and Safety
Why there is no evidence-based dose and why we refuse to print one. Decoction versus tincture as genuinely different interventions. The coumarin check run explicitly — plain coumarin is not an anticoagulant — and the beta-sitosterol check. Then the concrete risk on this shelf: undeclared sildenafil and tadalafil in sexual-enhancement supplements, which is a product hazard rather than a plant one, and the nitrate interaction that makes it dangerous.

- Memory retrieval, anti-stress and neuroprotective effects — PRECLINICAL. Real, reasonably designed rodent and tissue work; no human counterpart of any kind.
- Multi-ingredient blends improving sexual function — WEAK POSITIVE, UNATTRIBUTABLE. Published human results exist for formulas; none can be assigned to muira puama, whose dose is undisclosed.
- Muira puama alone improving libido or erectile function — ABSENT. No randomised, placebo-controlled, single-herb trial using validated instruments. Not tested and failed; not tested.
- Muira puama alone improving fatigue, mood or memory in people — ABSENT. Same position, despite the far better preclinical rationale.
- Raising testosterone — UNTESTED IN HUMANS. Asserted in marketing; no human hormonal data located.
- Identity of the active constituent — UNKNOWN. Ptychonal is the only structurally distinctive candidate; the sterols cannot be specific to this plant.
- Human pharmacokinetics, reproductive toxicology, interaction studies, dose-finding — ALL ABSENT. Which is why "no known interactions" is a statement about missing research, not a reassurance.
- Traditional use as aphrodisiac and nerve tonic — WELL DOCUMENTED AS TRADITION. Long, genuine, and not evidence of efficacy.
Read top to bottom, the ledger says something the marketing and the debunking both miss: the three best-established facts about muira puama are an identity problem, an adulteration problem, and a preclinical brain-pharmacology finding that has nothing to do with why anyone buys it.
How to Read This Deep Dive
A few conventions run through all four articles, and knowing them makes the pages faster to use.
- Absence of evidence is written as a finding, not left as a gap. Each article carries a numbered list of what is not known — missing toxicology, missing pharmacokinetics, missing dose-finding — so that "nobody has studied this" is a stated result rather than something you have to infer from silence.
- Borrowed evidence is labelled at every citation, not once in a preamble. Where a finding comes from a formula rather than the herb, from a different species, from a different plant part, from isolated tissue rather than a person, or from an ethanol extract where the tradition uses water, the label sits on the citation itself — because a reader arriving mid-page, or lifting one line, should carry the caveat along with the claim.
- Numbers we cannot stand behind are refused, and the refusal is stated. No invented milligram dose, no reprinted response percentages from an unretrievable source, no coumarin content per gram. Where sources disagree or a document cannot be checked, the article says so.
- Hazards are not manufactured either. The identity article and the safety article both include explicit lists of things muira puama is not guilty of — no pyrrolizidine alkaloids, no cyanogenic glycosides, no duration cap, no documented liver signal — because clearing a plant of a suspicion is as much a part of accuracy as raising one.

- Contradictions are reported as the story, not resolved in the flattering direction. Find on PubMed — formula, route and species substitution. A four-herb Brazilian product applied to excised rabbit tissue. Its individual-constituent arms are the part worth reading; the formula headline is the part usually quoted.
- Composition of the Catuama formula. PubMed topic search — confirm which four species are actually in the product before accepting a claim that credits one of them. Verifying that a formula contains the herb, and in what company, is a step skipped remarkably often.
- Rodent sexual-behaviour models and what they measure. PubMed topic search — methods. Mount and intromission latencies model copulatory mechanics, not human desire, and a centrally stimulating extract will improve them without any sexual specificity.
- Validated sexual-function instruments. IIEF validation and FSFI validation — methods. The tools a real trial would use, which is what kills the "you cannot trial a traditional herb" defence.
