Horsetail for Hair, Skin and Nails

If you have bought a hair, skin and nail supplement in the last twenty years, there is a good chance horsetail was in it. It is cheap, it has an appealing origin story, and it is genuinely one of the most silica-rich plants on Earth. The pitch writes itself: your hair and nails are made of tough structural protein, silicon is a structural mineral, therefore a silica-rich herb makes them tougher.

The pitch is not crazy. Silicon does appear to matter for connective tissue, and there really are randomized trials showing that oral silicon improves nail brittleness, hair strength and skin measurements. The problem is that those trials were done on a purified, deliberately absorbable silicon compound — and horsetail is not that compound. This page walks through exactly what has been tested, what has not, what a realistic best case for horsetail looks like, and which far more common causes of brittle nails and thinning hair are worth ruling out before you spend money on a herb.

Why Horsetail Is in Every Hair Supplement

Three things made horsetail the default herbal silicon source, and none of them is clinical evidence.

It is spectacularly silica-rich, and you can feel it. Run a dried horsetail stem between your fingers and it is faintly abrasive, like very fine sandpaper. That texture is mineral: the plant pulls dissolved silicon out of soil water and deposits hydrated silica through the epidermis and the ridges of its stems. This is not a subtle laboratory finding — it is the reason horsetail was sold in hardware shops as a scouring material for pewter, wood and cooking pots, and the reason it carries the folk names scouring rush and pewterwort. When a marketer says “nature's richest source of silica,” that specific part is true.

It is cheap and abundant. Horsetail grows as an aggressive weed across the whole Northern Hemisphere and regrows from deep rhizomes no matter what you do to it. Herb of that kind costs very little, which is exactly what a multi-ingredient beauty capsule wants.

The tradition is real. European folk practice used horsetail for brittle nails, thin hair, and slow-healing skin for centuries, and used it topically as an astringent wash. That is genuine traditional-use evidence: it tells you the herb was tolerated and thought worth using. Tier: traditional use only.

What none of those three things establishes is whether the silica in the plant becomes silicon in your bloodstream, or whether raising your silicon intake changes anything you would notice in a mirror. Those are the two questions the rest of this page is about.

What Silicon Actually Does in These Tissues

Silicon is a trace element with no officially set human requirement, which already tells you the science is unfinished. But it is not inert, and the mechanistic story is coherent.

The tissues that give the body its shape — skin dermis, cartilage, tendon, the organic scaffold inside bone, and the follicle that manufactures a hair — are built on collagen and on glycosaminoglycans, the water-holding molecules that pack between collagen fibres. Laboratory work over several decades has linked silicon to the enzymes and cross-linking steps involved in making those molecules. In cell and animal systems, silicon deprivation impairs connective-tissue formation, and silicon availability influences collagen output. Tier: preliminary (cell and animal). Hair and nails are a slightly different case, because the hard part of both is keratin — a sulfur-rich protein whose toughness comes largely from disulfide cross-links between cysteine residues, not from silicon. Silicon has been detected in hair and nail tissue, and hair silicon content has been used as an exposure marker, but no one has shown that silicon is a structural requirement of keratin the way cysteine is. This is a real limit on the mechanism: for hair and nails, silicon's plausible role is in the surrounding matrix and follicle environment rather than in the fibre itself.

So the honest mechanistic summary: strong for connective tissue, weaker and more indirect for keratin. Which matters, because nails and hair are precisely what horsetail is sold for.

The Trials That Get Cited — and What They Tested

When a horsetail product's marketing copy cites research, it is almost always citing one of a small handful of studies. It is worth knowing them by name, because in every case the substance tested was not horsetail.

Notice the pattern. The endpoints are exactly the ones horsetail is sold for; the intervention is a purified silicon compound designed for absorption. Substituting the herb for the compound is an assumption, and it is the assumption on which the entire hair-skin-nail case for horsetail rests.

Why does the substitution matter so much? Because silicon absorption is dominated by chemical form, not by total silicon content. A comparative absorption study in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2009 measured silicon uptake from a range of foods, drinks and supplements and found bioavailability varying enormously — soluble silicon in beverages absorbed well, while more polymerised and particulate forms absorbed poorly. Where Horsetail's Own Evidence Stands

Stated plainly: there is no good randomized trial of horsetail extract for hair growth, hair strength, nail brittleness or skin quality. Searches of the published literature return chemistry, antioxidant assays, animal anti-inflammatory work, one acute diuretic trial, and topical or wound-related preliminary studies — not a dermatological or cosmetic efficacy trial worth the name. What does exist:

The fair conclusion is not “horsetail does nothing.” It is “nobody has properly checked, the mechanism is plausible but attenuated by an absorption problem, and the confident claims on the bottle are borrowed from a different substance.” If that sounds like a low grade, compare it with how the same claims are usually presented.

Brittle Nails: What Is Usually Going On

Brittle nails — onychoschizia when they split in layers, onychorrhexis when they develop lengthwise ridges and snap — are extremely common, and the most frequent cause has nothing to do with any nutrient.

Water and detergent cycling is the usual culprit. The nail plate absorbs water, swells, and dries again. Repeated swelling and shrinking, accelerated by soaps, solvents, sanitiser and nail-polish remover, delaminates the layers of the plate mechanically. That is why brittle nails cluster in people who wash their hands constantly, and why the single most effective intervention in dermatology practice is not a supplement but reducing wet work and applying an occlusive moisturiser or urea-containing cream to the nail and nail fold.

Other real causes worth ruling out before blaming silicon deficiency:

Hair Thinning: The Causes a Herb Cannot Touch

The most important thing to know about hair loss is that the dominant patterns are hormonal and cyclical, and a mineral supplement is not aimed at either mechanism.

Androgenetic hair loss — pattern thinning in men and women — is driven by follicle sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone. It progressively miniaturises follicles. Nothing about silicon addresses that pathway. The treatments with real randomized evidence work on it directly or on the growth phase: topical minoxidil, and 5-alpha-reductase inhibition. Herbal 5-alpha-reductase claims exist — see saw palmetto for hair loss — and are far better matched to the mechanism than horsetail is, even where their evidence is also limited.

Telogen effluvium is diffuse shedding two to four months after a physiological shock: illness, surgery, childbirth, rapid weight loss, severe stress, or starting certain medications. It is self-limiting, and hair regrows once the trigger has passed. Because it resolves on its own, it is the single biggest source of false credit for supplements — whatever you started taking three months into a shed will appear to have worked.

Nutritional causes are real but specific. Iron deficiency, marked protein restriction, zinc deficiency, and both vitamin D and vitamin A extremes have documented links to shedding. These are worth testing for. “Not enough silicon” is not on the list of recognised nutritional causes of hair loss, because human silicon deficiency has never been characterised as a clinical entity. If hair is shedding noticeably, the productive sequence is: identify the pattern, check ferritin and thyroid function, review medications and recent physiological events, and treat the actual mechanism. Horsetail belongs, at most, at the end of that list. See also hair loss.

Skin: Collagen, Elasticity and Plausibility

Skin is where the silicon argument is strongest, because skin dermis really is a collagen-and-glycosaminoglycan tissue and silicon really is linked to those molecules in laboratory systems. The 2005 orthosilicic acid trial measured exactly the right things — roughness, elasticity, micro-relief — and found modest improvements over twenty weeks.

Two cautions before extrapolating that to horsetail capsules:

First, the magnitude. Skin measurement instruments detect changes far below the threshold at which a person notices their own face looks different. A statistically significant improvement in a roughness parameter is a real finding and simultaneously a small one. Anyone expecting a visible transformation from any oral silicon product, herbal or purified, is going to be disappointed.

Second, the competition. For skin ageing specifically, the interventions with substantial randomized evidence are sun protection, topical retinoids, and topical vitamin C formulations, alongside not smoking. An oral trace mineral is a minor player on that field. Horsetail's flavonoids add an antioxidant rationale, but only at the in-vitro tier. Topical Horsetail, Rinses and Cosmetics

Topical use sidesteps the absorption argument entirely, and it is also the oldest use. Horsetail decoctions were applied as an astringent wash for minor cuts, weeping skin, and nosebleeds, and as a final rinse for hair. Astringency is a genuine, immediate physical effect: tannins and other phenolics precipitate surface proteins and tighten tissue, which is why the effect is noticeable on application and why the traditional styptic use persisted.

What topical horsetail plausibly does:

What it does not do: deliver silicon into hair or nails from the outside. The silica in horsetail is a mineral particulate; it does not migrate into a keratin fibre and reinforce it, and a rinse cannot change a nail plate that was already made weeks ago in the matrix. A horsetail hair rinse is a conditioning treatment. That is a legitimate thing for it to be.

One practical safety note specific to topical use: the abrasive silica means dried horsetail should not be rubbed onto broken or inflamed skin, and a decoction should be strained well.

How Long Before You Could Possibly Tell?

Hair and nails are slow-motion tissues, and misjudging the timeline is how people convince themselves of effects that are not there.

This creates two problems at once. Anything short of three or four months cannot honestly be judged — and horsetail is a herb whose duration of use is deliberately limited because of thiaminase, which means the recommended course is close to, or shorter than, the minimum time needed to observe an effect. That tension is real and is rarely acknowledged. It is a genuine argument for using a well-absorbed silicon supplement rather than horsetail if the goal is a months-long cosmetic trial.

A cheap way to make your own judgement honest: photograph one hand in the same light every four weeks, and mark the date rather than trusting memory.

Forms, Dose and the Duration Cap

There is no officially established therapeutic dose of horsetail for cosmetic use, and any number a label gives you is a manufacturer's choice rather than a clinically derived one. Common forms:

Three rules that are not optional:

  1. The label must say Equisetum arvense. The toxic look-alike Equisetum palustre is a documented contaminant of commercial horsetail material. A product labelled only “horsetail” is unidentified plant material.
  2. Prefer a product processed or labelled to address thiaminase, and keep courses short rather than open-ended. The enzyme degrades vitamin B1, and duration limits exist for that reason.
  3. Do not take it at all if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if it is for a child, if your thiamine status is or may be low, if you have kidney disease or heart failure, or if you take lithium, digoxin or prescription diuretics.

What to Fix Before Reaching for a Herb

If the actual goal is stronger nails and less shedding, the following have better evidence, better cost, or both:

Bottom Line

Horsetail's cosmetic reputation is built on one true fact and one unproven leap. The fact is that it is genuinely one of the most silica-rich plants known. The leap is that eating silica-rich plant material raises tissue silicon enough to change hair, nails or skin — a leap the absorption data make questionable and that no adequate trial of horsetail has tested. The positive human trials everyone cites used a purified, absorbable silicon compound instead.

A fair position: horsetail is a reasonable, inexpensive traditional herb to try in a short course if you like the idea, with modest expectations, correct species identification, and awareness of the thiaminase limit. It is not a treatment for hair loss, and it is not where the money should go first if nails are splitting or hair is shedding. Fix the wet work, check iron and thyroid, eat enough protein, and use the herb as an extra rather than as the plan.
