Cleavers for Skin, and Its Traditional and Culinary Use

This is the page where cleavers comes out best, and for an unexpected reason: the claims here are the most modest, so the gap between claim and evidence is the narrowest. A cooling wash for irritated skin is a small assertion. A wild spring green cooked like spinach is a verifiable fact of food history. And the roasted-seed coffee substitute is not folklore at all but botany — cleavers sits in the same family as coffee, and the tradition follows from the taxonomy. Where the internal "blood cleansing" claims for skin disease are concerned we will be as blunt as on the rest of this site, and we will name what does work for psoriasis and eczema instead.

The Skin Tradition: Wash, Poultice, Spring Drink

Cleavers has three distinct traditional skin uses, and they carry different weights of plausibility. It is worth keeping them separate because most sources blur them into one.

The wash. An infusion of the fresh herb, or the pressed juice diluted, applied to irritated, itchy or scaly skin. Described consistently as cooling. This is the most defensible of the three.

The poultice. The fresh plant bruised or crushed and laid on grazes, minor wounds, insect bites, boils and sunburn. Also described as cooling and drawing.

The internal spring drink. Cleavers tea taken over weeks or months, as part of the alterative or "blood cleansing" tradition, in the hope of clearing chronic skin conditions from the inside. This is the claim that fails hardest, and we address it in its own section below.

Notice that the tradition itself is more careful than its modern retelling. The old herbals distinguish a topical application — a local, physical, immediately observable action — from an internal course of treatment aimed at a systemic cause. Modern marketing tends to collapse the two into "cleavers is good for skin," which sacrifices the one genuinely reasonable use to prop up the unreasonable one.

Why the Topical Use Is at Least Plausible

There is a real mechanism available for a cooling astringent wash, and it does not require the plant to be special.

Cleavers contains tannins — astringent polyphenols that bind and precipitate surface proteins. Applied to skin, that produces a mild tightening and drying, reduces weeping from a damp or exudative surface, and gives the subjective sensation of "cooling." This is not a herbal hypothesis; it is the same chemistry behind witch hazel, oak bark, black tea compresses and every traditional astringent wash in every herbal tradition on earth. It is a genuine physical effect on the stratum corneum.

Second, the vehicle does real work independently of the plant. A cool wet compress reduces itch through several established routes: it cools the skin, and cool temperatures suppress itch transmission; it hydrates the outer layer temporarily; and the sensory input competes with itch signalling at the level of the spinal cord. Any cool, wet, harmless liquid does this. If a cleavers compress soothes your skin, some — possibly most — of that is the compress.

Third, the herb is mostly water and plant polysaccharide, meaning a fresh-juice application is a bland, occlusive, non-irritating film on unbroken skin. Low risk, mild effect.

So the honest verdict: the topical tradition has a plausible non-magical mechanism, and a substantial part of it is generic to wet compresses. Search for the confirmation and you will not find it — try PubMed: Galium aparine topical skin research and PubMed: Galium aparine wound healing. There are no controlled trials of cleavers on any skin condition, which is a shame, because a randomised comparison of a cleavers compress against a plain water compress would be one of the cheapest and easiest herbal trials imaginable.

Psoriasis and Eczema: the Claim, and What Works

Cleavers tea taken internally for psoriasis and eczema is the single least supportable claim on this page, and it fails for a reason worth spelling out: the underlying model of the disease is wrong.

The alterative tradition assumed skin disease reflected impurity in the blood, which the kidneys and skin needed help expelling. We now know what these conditions actually are. Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated disease driven substantially by the interleukin-23 and interleukin-17 axis, with keratinocyte hyperproliferation as the visible result — which is exactly why drugs targeting those cytokines produce clearance rates that would have been unimaginable a generation ago. Atopic eczema involves skin-barrier dysfunction, often with filaggrin gene variants, plus type-2 immune activation and an altered skin microbiome. Neither is a state of accumulated blood impurity, so there is nothing for a cleansing herb to remove.

What is actually established, ranked by evidence rather than by tradition:

  1. Emollients for eczema — the foundation of management, with a large evidence base including trials of emollient use from infancy; see PubMed: emollients and moisturisers for eczema, Cochrane review. Unglamorous, cheap, and the thing most likely to help.
  2. Topical corticosteroids and topical calcineurin inhibitors for flares, with decades of randomised data.
  3. Biologic and small-molecule therapies for moderate to severe disease — the interleukin-17 and interleukin-23 inhibitors in psoriasis, dupilumab and JAK inhibitors in eczema.   4. Phototherapy, particularly narrowband ultraviolet B, with a long record in both conditions.
  5. Colloidal oatmeal and bland occlusives for symptomatic itch relief — modest, real, and the tier that a cleavers compress could at best hope to join; see PubMed: colloidal oatmeal in atopic dermatitis.
  6. Cleavers, internally. No trials, and a disease model that has been superseded.

Two things follow, and neither is "herbs are useless." The first is that a cleavers compress may be a perfectly pleasant adjunct for itch alongside proper treatment — it is the internal cleansing claim that fails, not the wash. The second is that psoriasis and eczema are conditions where delayed treatment has real costs: uncontrolled psoriasis is associated with cardiometabolic and psychiatric comorbidity, and untreated eczema in children means broken sleep, infection and scratching-driven progression. Wounds, Bites and Sunburn

The poultice tradition is the oldest use of cleavers and, oddly, the one where a bit of laboratory work is at least consistent with practice. Extract-level screens have reported antimicrobial and antioxidant activity for cleavers — see PubMed: Galium aparine antioxidant and antimicrobial extract studies. Consistency is not evidence, though, and the arithmetic problem that dogs all in-vitro antimicrobial claims applies here too: activity in a broth dilution assay is measured at concentrations of milligrams of crude extract per millilitre, whereas a crushed leaf on a graze delivers an unknown and certainly lower concentration into a wound bed full of protein, exudate and competing surfaces. In-vitro inhibition of a bacterium is a screening signal. It is not an antiseptic.

For genuine comparison, several topical botanicals in this space do have controlled human data, and it is instructive how narrow their claims are:

Practical guidance for the poultice, on the assumption you are going to try it anyway: use it on intact or barely broken skin only. A crushed wild plant is not sterile, and pressing unsterilised plant material into an open wound is how you introduce environmental organisms into tissue. Wash a real wound with clean running water, and see someone if it is deep, dirty, from a bite, or in anyone with diabetes or impaired circulation. Sunburn responds to cool compresses and time, and cleavers is a legitimate if unnecessary way of applying a cool compress.

"Blood Cleansing": Decoding the Alterative Idea

Rather than dismissing the alterative concept, it is more interesting to work out what its practitioners were probably observing, because it survived four centuries for reasons.

The spring tonic was taken at a specific moment: the end of a northern winter, after months of preserved food, in populations with genuinely marginal intakes of fresh vegetables and vitamin C. The tonic herbs were the first green things available — cleavers, nettle, dandelion, watercress, sorrel — and they were eaten in quantity. It would be surprising if people did not feel better. Add fresh greens, add fluid, add the return of daylight and outdoor activity, and you have a real seasonal improvement in wellbeing with several mundane causes.

The alterative framework then attributed all of it to the herb's action on the blood. That inference was wrong, but the observation underneath it was not. This is a much more useful way to read the tradition than either credulity or mockery: the effect was probably real and the explanation was wrong, and once nutritional deficiency stopped being widespread, most of the effect went with it. A modern reader with a varied diet is not the person the spring tonic was invented for.

Cleavers as Food: the Spring Potherb

Here the record is clean and the claims are checkable, because they are food history rather than medicine.

The young shoots of cleavers, gathered in early spring before the stems toughen and the hooks stiffen, have been eaten as a cooked green across Europe. They are near-universally cooked, and the reason is mechanical rather than toxicological: the hooked trichomes that let the plant cling to your sleeve do the same thing in the mouth, giving raw cleavers a rasping, clingy texture that most people find unpleasant. A few minutes of steaming or simmering collapses the hairs and the problem disappears. Cooked young cleavers is generally described as mild and grassy, closer to a young pea shoot than to a bitter green.

Now the arithmetic that food claims usually skip. You will find pages asserting that cleavers is "rich in vitamin C" or "high in minerals." We are not going to give you a nutrient figure, because we could not find a traceable one. There is no entry for Galium aparine in the standard reference food-composition databases, and no widely cited proximate or micronutrient analysis of the plant as a food. Any specific milligram figure circulating online is therefore untraceable, and quite possibly borrowed from a different wild green.

Two things can be said without inventing anything. First, cleavers is a young green leafy plant, and young green leafy plants as a class carry vitamin C, folate, carotenoids, potassium and some calcium and iron — so the qualitative claim is safe even though the quantitative one is not. Second, portion size dominates. A realistic spring gathering is a handful, cooked down to a couple of tablespoons, eaten a few times in a season. Whatever the per-100-gram figures turn out to be, the contribution of that to annual nutrient intake is negligible next to the vegetables in your fridge. Eat cleavers because it is free, local and interesting. Do not eat it as a nutritional strategy.

The Coffee Substitute, and Why It Is No Coincidence

This is the most charming true fact about the plant, and it is genuinely explanatory rather than merely quaint.

Cleavers belongs to the Rubiaceae, the madder family — which is also the family of Coffea. The small paired burr-like fruits of cleavers, dried and roasted, have a documented history as a coffee substitute in Europe, and they are one of the better-regarded of the many roasted-seed substitutes (chicory root, dandelion root, roasted barley, acorn) that fill the historical record. The connection is real taxonomy, not a marketing analogy: cleavers seeds are the fruits of a plant in the coffee family being roasted the way coffee beans are roasted.

Two qualifications keep this honest. First, there is no caffeine. The caffeine of coffee is a defence alkaloid concentrated in Coffea seeds and is not a family-wide trait, so roasted cleavers gives you a roasted, slightly nutty, coffee-adjacent drink with none of the stimulant effect. This is why it functioned as a substitute in periods when coffee was unavailable or unaffordable, and also why nobody preferred it once coffee returned. Second, the yield is derisory. Cleavers fruits are a couple of millimetres across, they ripen unevenly, and they are stuck to a hooked plant that resists handling. Gathering enough for a single cup is an afternoon's work. It is a fine thing to do once for the pleasure of having done it, and nobody in history did it twice from choice.

The flavour chemistry, incidentally, is not mysterious. Roasting any carbohydrate- and protein-containing seed generates the Maillard and caramelisation products — furans, pyrazines, pyrroles — that read as "roasted" and "coffee-like" to the human nose. Bedstraws, Rennet and the Family Around It

Cleavers is one Galium among many, and knowing the relatives is practically useful, because it is how you avoid confusing claims that belong to different plants.

The practical upshot for a reader: when you see a claim about "bedstraw" or about "Galium," check which species it belongs to. Attributing a G. verum or G. odoratum finding to cleavers is one of the commonest errors in writing about this plant.

Foraging It Responsibly

Cleavers is one of the easiest wild plants to identify with confidence, which is a genuine advantage. Square weak stems that scramble rather than stand, whorls of six to eight narrow leaves at each node, the whole plant covered in backward-hooked hairs so that it clings to a sleeve, tiny white four-petalled flowers, and paired round burr-like fruits. If it grabs your clothing and sticks to itself, you almost certainly have it.

The real risks are not confusion but context:

Ranking These Claims Honestly

Ordered by strength of support rather than by popularity, which reverses the usual presentation:

  1. Cleavers is a cooked wild spring green. Documented, checkable food history. No health claim attached and none needed. Highest confidence on the page.
  2. The roasted seeds make a caffeine-free coffee substitute. Documented, and explained by the plant's membership of the coffee family. Impractical, delightful, true.
  3. A cool cleavers compress may soothe irritated skin. Plausible mechanism, partly generic to wet compresses, untested but also low-stakes and low-risk.
  4. A poultice on minor intact-skin irritation. Traditional, consistent with in-vitro screens, no clinical evidence, small hygiene caveat.
  5. Internal cleavers for psoriasis or eczema. Traditional only, resting on a disease model now known to be wrong, and carrying a real opportunity cost. Lowest tier here.

Two things stand out about that ordering. The best-supported statements about cleavers are not medical claims at all — they are botany and cookery. And the claim a reader is most likely to have arrived with is at the bottom. That pattern is worth carrying to any herb page you read.
