Grapefruit: History and Origins

Almost every fruit in the supermarket is older than writing. Grapefruit is not. It did not exist anywhere on earth until the eighteenth century, when a pomelo brought to the Caribbean from Asia crossed with a sweet orange growing beside it and produced something nobody had planted. The first written descriptions come from Barbados in the 1750s; the name "grapefruit" first appears in print in Jamaica in 1814; and the fruit reached Florida in the 1820s. Modern DNA sequencing has since confirmed the parentage that eighteenth-century botanists could only guess at. This is the story of a fruit young enough that we can name the island it started on, and almost name the tree.

A Fruit With Almost a Birth Certificate

Trace almost any common food backwards and the trail dissolves into prehistory. Wheat and barley go back ten thousand years into the Fertile Crescent. Rice was domesticated in China before anyone wrote anything down. Apples came out of Kazakhstan along trade routes older than the Silk Road. The origins are inferred from seeds in ancient rubbish heaps and from genetics, not from documents.

Grapefruit is the exception, and that is what makes its history unusually satisfying to tell. It is younger than the printing press, younger than Shakespeare, younger than the telescope. It arose within the documented colonial period, on a specific small island, in circumstances that written sources partly capture. The first European descriptions of it survive. The first use of its name in print can be dated. And the modern genetic work confirms, rather than replaces, what eighteenth-century observers worked out by looking at the tree.

It happened because of colonial agriculture. Sweet oranges, lemons and limes had been carried into the Caribbean by Spanish and Portuguese ships from the earliest voyages. The pomelo — a huge, thick-skinned, mildly bitter citrus native to Southeast Asia — arrived later, in the seventeenth century. Once those two lived in the same warm island soil, hybridisation needed nothing but a bee. Nobody set out to breed grapefruit. It appeared.

The Parents: Pomelo and Sweet Orange

Grapefruit's parents are the pomelo (Citrus maxima) and the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis).

The pomelo is one of citrus's true ancestral species — one of the small handful that are not themselves hybrids. Native to Southeast Asia, it is the largest citrus fruit, sometimes the size of a football, with a very thick rind, a dry-ish flesh and a bitterness that is mild and pleasant rather than aggressive. It has been cultivated in China, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia for a very long time, and it remains a festival fruit across the region.

The sweet orange is not an ancestral species. Genomic work has established that it is itself a hybrid, descended from crosses between pomelo and mandarin (Citrus reticulata), the other great citrus ancestor. This produces a pleasing genealogical result: grapefruit's ancestry is roughly three-quarters pomelo and one-quarter mandarin, which is why it looks and tastes so much more like a pomelo than an orange — a big, bitter, thick-pithed fruit rather than a sweet, easy-peeling one.

How the pomelo reached the Caribbean is the part where documented history and legend blur. The traditional account credits a seventeenth-century English sea captain named Shaddock, who is said to have carried pomelo seeds from the East Indies to Barbados. The pomelo is still called the "shaddock" in parts of the Caribbean, which is at least consistent with the story. Whether the man existed as described, and whether the fruit came by his hand, is not securely documented. What is clear is that pomelo was growing in the West Indies alongside sweet orange by the late seventeenth century, and that is all the story requires.

Barbados and the Forbidden Fruit

The earliest surviving descriptions that appear to be of grapefruit come from Barbados. In 1750 the Welsh clergyman and naturalist Griffith Hughes published The Natural History of Barbados, in which he described the island's citrus trees and named one of them the "forbidden fruit" — a name that stuck locally for a long time afterward.

Whether Hughes's forbidden fruit was grapefruit, a pomelo, or a third thing altogether has been argued over for two centuries. The question was examined directly in a 1987 paper in Economic Botany under the enjoyable title "Mystery of the forbidden fruit: historical epilogue on the origin of the grapefruit". Its authors worked back through the surviving descriptions and the botanical record, and the honest summary of the scholarship is this: Barbados is the most probable place of origin, and the eighteenth-century texts are suggestive rather than conclusive.

The problem is that the vocabulary of the period was not stable. "Forbidden fruit", "shaddock", "pomelo" and "pummelo" were applied loosely and inconsistently to several different citrus fruits, sometimes in the same book. Adding to the difficulty, the fruit at that moment was genuinely new: an early hybrid would have varied a great deal from seedling to seedling, so different observers may have been describing genuinely different trees. Barbados remains the leading candidate, with Jamaica also proposed, and no document seals the question.

It is worth resisting the pull toward a tidier story. Popular accounts often state flatly that "grapefruit originated in Barbados in 1750" as though someone had recorded the event. Nobody did. What exists is a set of descriptions consistent with grapefruit, from an island where both parent species were growing, at about the right time.

How It Got the Name "Grapefruit"

The name is odd and everybody notices. The explanation almost everyone has heard is that the fruit hangs on the branch in tight clusters, like oversized grapes — which it does, and which is a perfectly good explanation.

It is not, however, the earliest recorded one. The name appears in print in John Lunan's Hortus Jamaicensis of 1814, a survey of the plants of Jamaica, and Lunan's stated reason is a supposed resemblance in flavour to grapes rather than in the way the fruit grows. That explanation strikes most modern readers as unconvincing — grapefruit tastes nothing like a grape — but it is the earliest written account we have, and the clustering explanation, however sensible, appears to have been attached later.

Around the same period the fruit acquired its scientific name. The Scottish botanist James Macfadyen, working in Jamaica, described it as Citrus paradisi in 1830 — "citrus of paradise", a name that reads today as a small piece of marketing avant la lettre. That binomial remains in use, though from the strict standpoint of modern genetics it is a courtesy: grapefruit is a hybrid, not a species that evolved on its own. Formal citrus taxonomy has been in near-continuous dispute for a century and a half for exactly this reason, and several of the names in the produce aisle survive on custom rather than on botanical logic.

What the DNA Confirmed

For most of the twentieth century the pomelo×orange parentage was a well-supported hypothesis based on how the fruit looked, how the tree grew, and how its chemistry compared with its presumed parents. A sequence of studies then tested it with progressively better tools, and the answer never changed.

Two results from that last study are worth carrying away. First, the whole citrus aisle is a hybrid swarm descended from a handful of true species — pomelo, mandarin, citron and a few others — recombined over and over by cultivation and chance. Second, the genus radiated out of the southeastern foothills of the Himalaya, from where it spread across Asia and eventually, by ship, everywhere else. Grapefruit is the newest branch on a very old tree.

Florida, 1823: The Fruit Finds Its Country

Grapefruit arrived in Florida in the 1820s, and the traditional account credits Odet Philippe, a French-born settler who planted citrus including grapefruit at Safety Harbor on Tampa Bay, conventionally dated to 1823. Philippe is a genuinely documented early settler, and the site of his grove is a Florida state park today. As with a good deal of early Florida history, some of the detail around him has been embroidered over the years and the precise date should be read as traditional rather than certified.

What is not in doubt is that Florida turned out to be close to ideal for the fruit. Grapefruit needs more accumulated heat than an orange to sweeten properly — it wants long, hot, humid summers, which is exactly what Florida has and what the Mediterranean citrus regions do not. That single agronomic fact explains why grapefruit became an American fruit rather than a Spanish or Italian one, and why it stayed a curiosity in Europe long after it was a breakfast staple in the United States.

Through the second half of the nineteenth century grapefruit went from oddity to crop. Growers around Tampa Bay, Dunedin and Lakeland propagated seedlings, selected the better ones, and grafted them onto rootstock. The railways reached central Florida and made it possible to ship fresh fruit north. By the early twentieth century grapefruit had acquired its lasting cultural position: the sharp, faintly austere start to an American breakfast, eaten with a serrated spoon out of the half, sometimes with sugar and sometimes deliberately without.

Duncan, Marsh and the Seedless Revolution

Two Florida selections from the nineteenth century still underpin the entire crop.

Duncan is the older and, by common consent among people who grow it, still the best-tasting grapefruit there is. It is white-fleshed, intensely flavoured, and thoroughly seedy — several dozen seeds in a fruit. That seediness kept it out of the fresh market as consumer expectations changed, and Duncan survives mainly in the juice trade and in the ancestry of nearly everything else. It traces back to an early Florida seedling and was propagated and named in the later nineteenth century.

Marsh changed the industry. Selected in Florida in the 1880s, it is a nearly seedless white grapefruit — a few seeds at most, often none. It gave up some of Duncan's intensity in exchange, and that trade was overwhelmingly worth it commercially. A fruit you can eat with a spoon without stopping to pick seeds out is a different product from one you cannot, and Marsh became the commercial backbone of the crop and the parent of the pink and red varieties that followed.

The pattern here is worth naming because it repeats across the whole produce section: the varieties that win are the convenient ones, not necessarily the best-tasting ones. Seedlessness, shipping durability, uniform appearance and a long shelf life are what a commercial crop is selected for. Flavour is one criterion among several, and it does not always win. Anyone who has eaten a Duncan straight off a Florida tree knows exactly what was traded away.

The Accidental Pinks and the Deliberate Reds

Every pink and red grapefruit descends from mutations, and the story divides neatly into an accidental half and a deliberate one.

The accidental half. Fruit trees occasionally throw a bud sport — a single branch that spontaneously mutates and bears fruit unlike the rest of the tree. Graft that branch and you have a new variety. In 1913, at Oneco in Florida, a pink-fleshed sport was found on a Marsh tree; propagated, it became the Thompson, also sold as Pink Marsh, and it was the first pink grapefruit on the market. In 1929, in a grove near McAllen in south Texas, a grower named A. E. Henninger found a deeper red sport on a Thompson tree. That became the Ruby Red, and it made the Texas industry. It was patented in the 1930s, among the earliest fruit varieties to receive protection under the United States plant patent system.

The deliberate half. By the mid-twentieth century breeders had stopped waiting for chance. At the citrus research centre in Weslaco, Texas, Richard Hensz used ionising radiation to raise the mutation rate deliberately — irradiating seeds and budwood, growing out the survivors, and selecting the ones that came out redder. Star Ruby, released in 1970, was the result: dramatically deeper in colour than Ruby Red, as a 1979 comparison of the two juices documented. Rio Red followed in 1984 from the same programme, combining the deep colour with better tree performance, and it is the mainstay of the Texas crop today.

That deserves a sentence of plain statement, because it surprises people: the reddest grapefruit in the shop is the product of deliberate radiation-induced mutation breeding, developed in the 1970s and 1980s, sold ever since without comment, and universally regarded as an ordinary conventional fruit. Mutation breeding by irradiation is an established and widely used technique — hundreds of crop varieties in current cultivation came from it, from barley to pears. The radiation is used to speed up the same random mutation that happens naturally, and none of it remains in the plant. It is a useful fact to have on hand when the subject of what counts as "natural" food comes up.

Texas and the Rio Grande Valley

The Lower Rio Grande Valley of south Texas became the second great grapefruit region and the home of the red varieties. The combination that made it work was heat, irrigation water from the Rio Grande, and the Ruby Red mutation appearing there in 1929 — a genuine piece of regional luck. Texas grapefruit was marketed on colour and sweetness in a way Florida's whites could not match, and the identification became strong enough that in 1993 the Texas legislature named the Texas Red Grapefruit the official state fruit.

The Valley's history has been punctuated by hard freezes. Citrus is a subtropical crop grown at the northern edge of its comfort in Texas, and severe freezes in the twentieth century destroyed large parts of the acreage more than once, each time forcing replanting on a scale that reshaped the industry. What kept the region viable was the varieties: growers replanting a lost grove replanted with the newest and reddest selections, so each disaster accelerated the shift from Ruby Red toward Star Ruby and Rio Red.

The Grapefruit Diet: A Fad That Would Not Die

By around 1930 grapefruit had acquired a second identity as a weight-loss food. The vehicle was the "Hollywood diet" or "eighteen-day diet", a severely restricted regime built around grapefruit, which circulated through American magazines and stayed in print, in one form or another, for the rest of the century. Its central claim was that grapefruit contains a fat-burning enzyme that dissolves fat when eaten before a meal.

There is no such enzyme. There never was. The claim appears to have been invented as marketing and then simply repeated for ninety years, which is a useful reminder of how long a satisfying falsehood can survive without evidence.

The mundane truth is that the diets worked, when they worked, because they were severely calorie-restricted — the eighteen-day version was low enough in calories that almost anyone following it would lose weight regardless of what fruit was involved. Modern controlled trials have looked properly at the question, and the honest summary is that grapefruit before a meal produces small effects consistent with it being a low-calorie, filling, slow-to-eat food, and no effects consistent with a fat-burning agent. One trial compared grapefruit preloads directly against plain water and found no advantage for the fruit. The evidence is set out in full on the naringin and naringenin page.

The fad did leave one lasting mark on how grapefruit is thought about, and it is not entirely a bad one: it fixed the fruit in the public mind as something virtuous. That reputation is deserved, just not for the reason advertised.

1989: The Accident That Put Grapefruit on Drug Labels

The most consequential event in grapefruit's modern history happened in a clinical pharmacology laboratory in London, Ontario, and it was not about grapefruit at all.

A team led by David Bailey was studying whether alcohol altered the blood-pressure effects of felodipine. To keep volunteers blind to which drink contained the ethanol, the researchers needed a masking flavour strong enough to hide it. After trying various options in the lab — reportedly including tasting them themselves one evening — they settled on grapefruit juice, because it was the only thing pungent enough to work.

The felodipine blood levels came back far higher than the published figures for that dose, high enough that a laboratory error was the first assumption. When the team retested grapefruit juice on its own, without alcohol, the juice alone roughly tripled the amount of felodipine reaching the bloodstream. The finding was published as a short letter in The Lancet in 1991.

That letter opened an entire research field. Over the following three decades the mechanism was worked out in detail — furanocoumarins in the fruit irreversibly destroy the CYP3A4 enzyme in the intestinal wall, which normally breaks down many drugs before they are absorbed — and the list of affected medicines grew steadily as newer drugs were tested. By the time Bailey and colleagues published the standard review in the Canadian Medical Association Journal in 2013, it named more than forty medicines with the potential for a serious interaction. It is a small classic of accidental discovery, and it belongs in this history for a reason beyond the anecdote: it is why a fruit that had spent two centuries as an unremarkable breakfast item now carries a warning on pharmacy labels worldwide.

Citrus Greening and the Modern Industry

The most recent chapter is the hardest one. In 2005, Huanglongbing — citrus greening disease — was confirmed in Florida. It is caused by a bacterium spread from tree to tree by a tiny sap-feeding insect, the Asian citrus psyllid. Infected trees produce small, misshapen, bitter fruit that drops early, and the trees themselves decline and die. There is no cure. A tree that has it will not recover.

The consequences for Florida have been severe. Grapefruit acreage and production have fallen by more than ninety percent from their early-2000s peak, and hurricanes in 2017 and 2022 struck an industry already weakened past the point of easy recovery. Research into resistant rootstocks, antibacterial treatments, psyllid control and genetically engineered resistance is active and well funded, and none of it has yet produced a general solution. The economics of managing an infected grove have been analysed in detail and are unforgiving: growers can slow the decline at significant cost, but not stop it.

The global picture has shifted accordingly. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reports grapefruit and pomelo together in one category, and China now leads it by a wide margin, with Vietnam, the United States, Mexico and South Africa among the other significant producers. The centre of gravity has moved back toward Asia — which, given that the pomelo came from there in the first place, closes a circle that opened in the seventeenth century.

Grapefruit is therefore a fruit with a documented beginning, roughly three centuries of history, and a genuinely uncertain future in the region that made it famous. That is unusual, and it is worth knowing while eating one.
