What a Species-Locked Search Actually Returns

Neither is a study of betony’s effect on anxiety. The first is the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s own LactMed drug-and-lactation database entry for betony, which states in a single background sentence that the plant “has been used as a nerve tonic to treat anxiety and headaches” — a description of the tradition, not a report of a study. The second, discussed in more detail below, is a 2019 survey of ethnoveterinary folk medicine. A dedicated search for depression or antidepressant activity of the species itself returns zero records, and a search for cognitive or memory effects returns zero as well. As with the headache claim, the honest summary is not “limited evidence” — it is no human or animal study of Stachys officinalis itself has tested its effect on anxiety, mood, or cognition, in the indexed literature as it currently stands.
The Compound-Level Case: Verbascoside and Stachydrine
What does exist is pharmacology of two named compounds betony contains, studied mostly outside the context of betony itself. Both need to be labeled as compound-level evidence, not herb-level evidence, at the point they are cited — not once in a preamble that a reader arriving mid-page or sharing a single fact will never see.
Verbascoside (acteoside)
Betony’s signature phenylethanoid glycoside has documented antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective pharmacology reviewed comprehensively in 2014, and more recent work specifically describes verbascoside as a neuroprotective phenylethanoid glycoside with anti-depressive properties in preclinical models. Verbascoside occurs across dozens of plant families, and the great majority of this pharmacology was generated using verbascoside isolated from other sources (olive leaf, plantain, and various ornamental and medicinal plants are common sources in the literature), studied in cell culture or in rodents at doses achieved by injection or concentrated extraction — not from steeping betony leaves in hot water. Stachydrine

- A specific proposed mechanism — involvement of the GABAergic and opioidergic systems, tested in a seizure-threshold model.
- Its own dedicated modern comprehensive pharmacological and toxicological review, the kind of synthesis that exists for an actively studied plant — something wood betony’s 19-record literature does not support.
The two plants are not close substitutes botanically or traditionally. Wood betony is a European meadow and woodland-edge plant with a documented history running through Roman, Anglo-Saxon, and English herbal medicine. Stachys lavandulifolia is a plant of the Iranian plateau with its own distinct traditional-medicine lineage. They share a genus and, in casual English usage, the risk that “a Stachys species was shown to reduce anxiety in a trial” gets reported as if it applies to whichever Stachys the reader already had in mind. It does not. If a source describes a clinical trial of betony for anxiety, the first thing worth checking is which Stachys it actually used.

This is not a trial and not a test of any outcome — it is a 2003 interview-based ethnobotanical record, published in 2019, documenting that betony’s reputation as a calming, heart-and-nerve-supportive herb persisted into contemporary folk veterinary practice on a different continent, centuries after it left the European medical mainstream. It demonstrates the reputation’s durability, not its accuracy.
Safety Considerations Specific to Nervous-System Use
- Additive sedation. Even without trial-level proof of effect, a herb traditionally used as a calming nervine could in theory add to the effect of prescription sedatives, anti-anxiety medications, or other relaxing herbs such as valerian or kava. Combine thoughtfully and be alert to excessive drowsiness.

Anyone encountering a citation for a Stachys species and anxiety should check which species before repeating the claim.
