Agrimony the Herb vs Agrimony the Bach Flower Remedy

Search for "agrimony benefits" and you will be shown two completely different products under one plant name. One is a tannin-rich herbal infusion used for centuries for mild diarrhoea and as a throat gargle. The other is Bach Agrimony — an extremely dilute flower preparation intended to address an emotional pattern, sold in a small dropper bottle of brandy and water. They share a botanical name and nothing else: not the plant part, not the preparation method, not the concentration, not the claimed indication, not the proposed mechanism, and not the evidence base.

This page exists because that confusion is genuine and consequential, and because it runs in both directions. A reader who finds the herbal tannin literature and buys a Bach dropper bottle has bought something with essentially no tannin in it. A reader who finds the Bach type description — which is psychologically vivid and, for many people, uncannily recognisable — and then reads that "agrimony has clinically documented traditional use in Europe" has quietly transferred a regulatory finding about a herbal tea onto a flower essence it does not cover.

We will describe each accurately, on its own terms, and report the evidence for each plainly. There is no need for contempt in either direction and none is intended. The single most useful thing this page can do is stop one product borrowing the other's credibility.

Two Products, One Plant Name

Set the two side by side and the scale of the difference is immediately obvious.

Agrimony the herb. Plant part: the dried aerial parts — leaf, stem and flowering top. Preparation: hot-water infusion, or an alcohol tincture. Dose: grams of dried herb per cup. Active constituents: hydrolysable and condensed tannins including agrimoniin, plus flavonoids and phenolic acids. Proposed mechanism: astringency, a physical protein-precipitating action on the surface it touches. Indication: mild acute diarrhoea; gargle for minor mouth and throat inflammation. Regulatory position in Europe: traditional-use registration. Interactions: real ones — it inhibits non-haem iron absorption and can bind medicines taken at the same time.

Bach Agrimony. Plant part: the flowers only. Preparation: flower heads floated in a bowl of spring water in sunlight, the water then preserved with brandy and diluted twice more. Dose: a few drops. Active constituents: none identified, and none claimed in a chemical sense. Proposed mechanism: an energetic or vibrational quality imparted to the water, acting on emotional state. Indication: a described personality and emotional pattern — people who conceal inner distress behind cheerfulness. Regulatory position: generally sold without a licence resting on efficacy. Interactions: none plausible, because there is nothing pharmacologically present, apart from the alcohol in the carrier.

Two products, one name, and no shared property except the species on the label.

The Herb, in One Paragraph

Agrimonia eupatoria is a Rosaceae herb of European hedgerows and field margins, known as church steeples for its tall yellow flower spike. Its dried aerial parts are markedly astringent from a high tannin content, and that astringency — a physical, local, non-absorbed, protein-precipitating effect — is the mechanism behind every plausible claim made for it. The diarrhoea article sets that argument out in full, including the finding that no adequate controlled human trial of agrimony for diarrhoea exists, and the gargle article explains why the throat is the herb's best case. So the herb's evidential position is: coherent mechanism, dense documented tradition, European traditional-use registration on grounds of long use and plausibility rather than efficacy, real interactions, and no trials.

That position is modest. It is worth stating clearly here, because the comparison below is not "proven herb versus unproven essence." It is untested traditional herb with a coherent mechanism versus tested flower essence whose trials came out null. Those are different situations, and the second is in one sense further along: someone actually looked.

What Bach Agrimony Is

Bach Agrimony is one of the original set of remedies described by the English physician Edward Bach (1886–1936) and published in his 1933 work The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies. Bach's system eventually comprised thirty-eight remedies, each keyed not to a disease but to an emotional state or temperament.

The Agrimony type, in Bach's own framing and as elaborated by later practitioners, is a person who suffers inwardly while presenting a cheerful, humorous, untroubled face to the world. They are peace-lovers who avoid conflict and dislike argument, who make light of their own difficulties, and who may keep the mask in place with alcohol, drugs or constant company and distraction. The remedy is offered for that concealment — the goal being an honest cheerfulness rather than a performed one.

It is worth saying plainly: this is a good psychological observation. The pattern it describes is real, recognisable, clinically familiar, and often shows up in people who are genuinely struggling and genuinely hard to help because nothing looks wrong. Many readers will recognise themselves or someone close to them in it. That recognition is a large part of why the Bach system has endured for ninety years, and dismissing the description because the remedy lacks evidence confuses two separate things. The description can be acute while the dropper bottle does nothing.

One practical note, because it is a common mix-up: Agrimony is not one of the ingredients of Rescue Remedy, the five-flower combination that is by far the best-known Bach product. If you bought Rescue Remedy you did not buy Agrimony.

How a Bach Remedy Is Made

The method matters more than anything else on this page, because it is what determines that no agrimony chemistry survives into the bottle. Bach described two preparation methods; Agrimony, as one of the earlier remedies, is made by the sun method.

  1. Collection. Flower heads are picked at their peak, on a clear morning.
  2. Sun infusion. The flowers are floated on the surface of a glass bowl of spring water and left in direct sunlight for some hours. They are not crushed, macerated, boiled, or extracted with alcohol. The plant material is then removed.
  3. Mother tincture. The infused water is preserved by combining it with an approximately equal volume of brandy.
  4. Stock bottle. A couple of drops of mother tincture go into a fresh 30 mL bottle of brandy. This is what is sold in shops.
  5. Dosage bottle. The user typically puts a couple of drops of stock into a further 30 mL of water, or takes drops of stock directly in water.

Step 2 is the decisive one and it is routinely skipped over in popular accounts. A herbal infusion works by putting plant material into hot water long enough for its constituents to dissolve out — that is why an agrimony tea is astringent within four minutes. The sun method does the opposite: whole, uncrushed flowers rest on the surface of cold water. Even before any dilution, the mother tincture is not a tannin extract in any meaningful sense. Bach never claimed it was.

The Dilution Arithmetic, With Its Assumptions Shown

It is worth doing the arithmetic rather than gesturing at it, and worth printing the assumptions so anyone can check them.

Take a drop as roughly 0.05 mL — the conventional figure for an aqueous drop from a standard dropper, which varies with viscosity and dropper design. Two drops is therefore about 0.1 mL. Into a 30 mL stock bottle, that is a dilution of roughly 1 part in 300. The dosage step repeats it, giving roughly 1 part in 90,000. The mother tincture was itself half brandy, so make it around one part in 200,000 of sun-infused water — and the sun-infused water was never an extract to begin with.

We are stating that as an order of magnitude, not a measured value. Drop volume varies, preparation instructions differ between manufacturers and between practitioners, and some users take stock drops directly, which skips one dilution. The conclusion is robust to all of that, because it does not depend on the exact figure: whether the answer is one part in ten thousand or one part in a million, the quantity of agrimony-derived material in a dose is far below any threshold at which a plant polyphenol could have a pharmacological effect. That is not a criticism of the product on its own terms. It is simply a statement of what is in the bottle, and it is the reason the herbal literature cannot be cited in support of it.

Edward Bach and the System's Own Logic

Bach trained in medicine in Birmingham and London, worked as a bacteriologist and immunologist, and practised at the Royal London Homoeopathic Hospital before abandoning conventional practice in the late 1920s to develop the flower remedies. His route was not chemical analysis. He selected plants by intuition and by his own reported sensitivity to their effects, and he organised the results around emotional states rather than physical diseases.

His proposed mechanism was explicitly not chemical. Bach held that a plant's healing quality could be transferred to water as a kind of energetic or vibrational imprint, and that this imprint acted on the mind and emotions, with physical illness understood as downstream of emotional disharmony. Later practitioners have kept that framing.

Two things follow, and both are important for reading the evidence fairly.

First, it is not a weak or badly-made herbal preparation. It is a different theory of how the plant acts. Criticising Bach remedies for containing no measurable plant chemistry is not a discovery; it is a restatement of their own design, and Bach would have agreed with the measurement while disputing its relevance.

Second, that framing puts the claim outside what chemistry can adjudicate — but not outside what a trial can. No mechanism has to be accepted to run a randomised, placebo-controlled trial. You give some people the remedy, some people the identical carrier without it, keep everyone blind, and measure the outcome. That test is agnostic about mechanism and it has been performed. Which is where the evidence section begins.

Is It Homeopathy? Close, But Not Quite

Bach remedies are frequently called homeopathic, and the description is loosely fair and technically wrong in ways worth knowing.

What they share with homeopathy: extreme dilution to the point where measurable material is essentially absent; a claim that a non-material property of the original substance carries the effect; individualised selection of the remedy to the person rather than to the diagnosis; and a founder with homeopathic training — Bach practised at a homeopathic hospital.

What differs: homeopathy rests on the similia principle, that a substance producing symptoms in the healthy treats similar symptoms in the sick. Bach's system has no such principle — remedies are chosen for a matching emotional quality, not for symptom similarity. Homeopathy uses defined potency scales with succussion at each step (6C, 30C, and so on); Bach preparations use a simple fixed dilution with no potency notation. And homeopathic provings are a formalised procedure Bach did not employ.

So: a cousin, not a subset. This matters practically for one reason. Evidence about homeopathy in general — and there is a great deal of it, including the comparative analysis of placebo-controlled trials of homeopathy and conventional medicine published by Shang and colleagues in The Lancet in 2005, and the 2015 assessment by Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council — is suggestive but not decisive for Bach remedies specifically. That is the same borrowed-evidence discipline this site applies to herbs, applied here in the direction that is less convenient for the sceptical case. Fortunately it is not needed, because Bach remedies have their own trials.

The Evidence on Bach Flower Remedies

They have been studied directly, and the results are consistent.

Systematic reviews. Thaler and colleagues published a systematic review of Bach flower remedies for psychological problems and pain in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2009. Ernst published a systematic review of randomised clinical trials of Bach flower remedies in Swiss Medical Weekly in 2010, following an earlier review of flower remedies in Wiener Klinische Wochenschrift in 2002. Their conclusions converge: the placebo-controlled trials do not demonstrate effects beyond placebo, and the more rigorous the trial, the more clearly null the result.

Individual trials. Walach, Rilling and Engelke published a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised trial with partial crossover of Bach flower remedies for test anxiety in the Journal of Anxiety Disorders in 2001, finding no benefit over placebo. Pintov and colleagues published a prospective double-blind controlled study of Bach flower remedies in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in the European Journal of Paediatric Neurology in 2005. Open-label and uncontrolled reports have been more favourable, which is exactly the pattern expected when an intervention's effect is carried by expectation and consultation rather than by the substance.

Why Neither Can Borrow the Other's Credibility

This is the operative conclusion, and it is symmetrical.

The Bach remedy cannot borrow the herb's credibility. When a flower-essence retailer or article mentions agrimony's centuries of European use, its ellagitannin agrimoniin, its antimicrobial laboratory results, or its European traditional-use registration, none of that describes the product being sold. The registration covers a herbal infusion of the aerial parts for diarrhoea and gargling. It says nothing whatever about a sun-infused, doubly diluted flower preparation for emotional concealment. Transferring it is not a minor imprecision — it is attaching a regulatory assessment to a product the assessment never examined.

The herb cannot borrow the Bach remedy's failure either. "Agrimony has been shown not to work in controlled trials" is an equally false transfer. What failed in those trials was an extremely dilute flower preparation tested against emotional and psychological endpoints. That result has no bearing on whether tannins precipitate proteins on an inflamed mucous membrane. The herb's problem is that nobody has tested it, which is a different problem entirely and is not resolved by the flower-essence literature in either direction.

And the emotional claim cannot be moved onto the herb. Perhaps the most common practical confusion is a reader who recognises themselves in the Agrimony type description and then buys dried agrimony herb to make tea for it. There is no basis for that at all. The herbal tradition never used agrimony for emotional concealment; the indication belongs entirely to Bach's system, and the herb has no known psychoactive action. What they would be drinking is an astringent tannin infusion, with its real interactions and no relevant claim.

Taking Placebo Seriously Without Pretending

"No better than placebo" is often delivered as though it settled the matter, and it does settle the question of specific efficacy. It does not settle what a reader should do, and this section is here because pretending otherwise is its own kind of dishonesty.

Placebo responses in subjective outcomes — mood, anxiety, pain, distress — are frequently substantial. Hróbjartsson and Gøtzsche's analysis of trials comparing placebo with no treatment, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2001, is the standard corrective against overstating placebo effects across the board, and it also identified subjective and pain outcomes as where they are most apparent. And Kaptchuk and colleagues showed in PLoS ONE in 2010 that placebos administered openly, with patients told plainly they were receiving an inert preparation, still produced measurable improvement in irritable bowel syndrome. So the ritual, the attention and the expectation are doing real work that does not depend on deception.

The herb has real, mechanism-based cautions, all of them following from the tannins: inhibition of non-haem iron absorption, reduced absorption of medicines taken at the same time, gastric irritation and constipation at higher doses, a theoretical additive effect with glucose-lowering medication given animal data, and no established safety in pregnancy at medicinal doses. These are set out in detail in the safety article, and they are the reason the herb is not something to take casually and indefinitely.

The flower remedy has essentially no pharmacological hazard, for the same reason it has no pharmacological action. Two real considerations remain, and they are not trivial:

The Honest Bottom Line

Agrimony the herb and Agrimony the Bach flower remedy are two unrelated propositions sharing a plant name. The herb is a tannin-rich astringent with a coherent local mechanism, a long documented tradition, a European traditional-use registration that certifies long use and acceptable safety rather than efficacy, real interactions worth respecting, and no controlled trials. The Bach remedy is an extremely dilute sun-infused flower preparation whose own theory of action is energetic rather than chemical, addressed to a psychologically astute description of emotional concealment, and whose randomised placebo-controlled trials have not shown effects beyond placebo.

Neither result transfers to the other. The herb's tradition is not evidence for the essence; the essence's null trials are not evidence against the herb; and the emotional indication belongs to the essence alone and gives no reason to drink agrimony tea.
