Mango: History and Origins
The mango was domesticated in the forests where northeastern India, Bangladesh and northwestern Myanmar meet — the Indo-Burma region — and it has been cultivated there for something like four thousand years. That is long enough for a fruit to stop being merely food. Mango leaves hang over doorways at Hindu weddings; the Buddha was said to have been given a mango grove for rest and teaching; Sanskrit literature returns to the tree again and again; and the Mughal emperors turned mango growing into a state art, planting orchards of extraordinary scale and using grafting to fix named varieties that are still sold under those names today. Then came the ships. Portuguese, Spanish and later British vessels carried mango out of India to East Africa, Brazil, the Philippines, the Caribbean and finally Florida, and a forest tree became the most-produced tropical fruit on Earth. This page follows that record — the parts that are documented, the parts that are legend, and the parts modern genome sequencing has recently settled.

The Wild Ancestor and the Genus
The cultivated mango is Mangifera indica, one species in a genus of perhaps 60 to 70, nearly all of them native to South and Southeast Asia. The centre of species diversity for the genus is not India but the Malay Peninsula, Borneo and Sumatra, where wild Mangifera species are abundant and where many still grow in forest rather than orchard. Botanists have continued to work on the genus into the present — a 2022 paper reinstated Mangifera sumatrana, a Sumatran endemic, as a distinct species, which is a reminder that the group's taxonomy is still being sorted out.
The genus sits inside the Anacardiaceae, the cashew family, alongside cashew, pistachio, sumac, the pink peppercorn, and the poison ivy and lacquer trees of the genus Toxicodendron. That relationship is not trivia: the whole family shares a defensive chemistry of long-chain phenols, and mango's version of it is why some people react to the peel and sap (see Urushiol, Allergy, and Safety).
Molecular work on Mangifera in Indonesia and Thailand has mapped the diversification of the genus across the region, and the picture that emerges is of a group that radiated in the wet tropical forests of Southeast Asia, with M. indica emerging toward the northwestern edge of that range — the part that reaches into Assam, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Where It Was Domesticated, and What the Genomes Say
The classical botanical answer, given by S. K. Mukherjee in a 1972 paper in Economic Botany that is still cited, places the origin of the cultivated mango in the region spanning northeastern India, Bangladesh and northwestern Myanmar, with cultivation running back roughly four millennia. Mukherjee's case rested on the distribution of wild and semi-wild populations, on the concentration of variation, and on the textual record.
Modern genetics has largely confirmed that placement and added detail:
- Myanmar landraces were compared with cultivars from Florida, India and Southeast Asia using microsatellite markers. The Myanmar accessions showed considerable genetic diversity and a high number of private alleles, and they separated from the other groups in both principal-coordinates and Bayesian cluster analysis. The authors noted directly that mango is believed to have evolved in a large area spanning northeastern India, Bangladesh and northwestern Myanmar — and their data supported a broad genetic background there, exactly what you expect near a centre of origin.
- The mango genome was published in 2020 as a chromosome-scale assembly and the first reference genome for the Anacardiaceae. Resequencing revealed two distinct groups of mango varieties: commercial varieties clustering with Indian germplasm and showing allelic admixture, and indigenous Southeast Asian varieties forming the second group. Landraces indigenous to China formed their own clades. The same work found a recent whole-genome duplication in mango's history and an expansion of the chalcone synthase gene family associated with the fruit's urushiol-type chemistry.
- A mango pangenome published in 2025 went further, showing how much a single reference genome distorts population analyses in this species — a technical finding, but one that says the genetic history is still being revised rather than settled.
- Microsatellite work on cultivars, both in India and in Japan, has repeatedly shown that named varieties are far more closely related than their marketing suggests, and that the Indian and Southeast Asian pools are genuinely distinct.
One structural feature of mango biology shaped all of this. Mango seeds come in two kinds: monoembryonic, where the seed produces a single seedling that is a genetic cross of two parents, and polyembryonic, where the seed produces several seedlings, most of them clones of the mother tree. Indian mangoes are largely monoembryonic; Southeast Asian mangoes are largely polyembryonic. That difference determines how a variety can be propagated. A polyembryonic mango comes true from seed and can be spread by anyone with a stone. A monoembryonic one does not — every seedling is a lottery — which is precisely why grafting mattered so much in India and why it arrived there as a transformative technique.
Four Thousand Years in India: Text and Ritual
Mango appears in the Indian written record early and never leaves it. The Sanskrit name is āmra, and the fruit is listed in the Amarakosha, the classical Sanskrit thesaurus compiled by Amarasimha, which gives a set of synonyms for it — the sign of a plant thoroughly embedded in the language rather than newly encountered. The Prakrit amba gives the Malayalam māṅṭa, which Portuguese traders on the Malabar coast rendered as manga, and from there English took mango. The word's route into English is itself a record of who was buying the fruit and where.
Its ritual life is at least as old as its literary one, and much of it survives unchanged:
- Toranas — strings of fresh mango leaves hung across doorways at weddings, festivals and house-blessings, marking the threshold as auspicious. This is still done daily across India.
- The pūrṇa kumbha — the ritual pot topped with mango leaves and a coconut, one of the most widely recognised auspicious symbols in Hindu practice.
- Mango wood and leaves in the fire ritual, used as sacrificial fuel in Vedic homa and yajna.
- The mango blossom and Kāma — the god of desire carries five flower-tipped arrows, and the mango blossom is one of them. The fruit's association with spring, fertility and love runs through classical Sanskrit poetry, and Kālidāsa in particular writes the mango into his seasonal descriptions.
- The ambi or paisley motif — the teardrop shape woven into Kashmiri shawls and printed on textiles across South Asia is widely understood as a stylised mango, and the Hindi word for the motif is simply the word for the fruit.
None of this required a botanist's knowledge. It is what happens when a tree is around long enough that a culture builds itself partly out of it.
The Mango Grove: Buddhist Tradition and Amrapali
Buddhist tradition gives the mango a particular role. The mango grove — a cool, shaded, walled orchard — recurs in the Pāli canon as the setting where the Buddha rests, teaches and receives visitors. Groves are named and located in the texts, and the donation of a grove to the sangha is a recurring act of lay patronage. In one of the best-known of these accounts, the courtesan Amrapali of Vaishali — whose name itself derives from the mango — donates her mango grove to the Buddha and his community, and later takes ordination herself.
Two things are worth separating here, and this page will do it plainly:
- What is textual tradition. The mango-grove episodes and the Amrapali narrative come from Buddhist scripture and commentary, composed and transmitted over centuries. They are genuine historical sources for how mango was regarded, and they are strong evidence that mango orchards were established, valuable, donatable property in the Gangetic plain in the mid-first-millennium BCE. Vaishali itself is a real archaeological site.
- What is not verified fact. The specific events — who gave which grove to whom, and what was said there — are religious narrative, not documented history, and this page does not present them as biography. The famous story that the Buddha was gifted a mango grove is best described as tradition, which is exactly what it is.
The distinction matters because the same holds for a great deal of mango's early history. The fruit's presence and importance in ancient South Asia are well supported. Individual anecdotes about it usually are not.
The Mughals: Orchards, Grafting, and Named Cultivars
The Mughal period, roughly the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, is when mango cultivation in India moved from ancient practice to systematic horticulture. The Mughal emperors were serious garden-builders, and mango was their favourite fruit; the imperial court's interest translated into orchards on a scale that had not existed before.
The most-repeated example is Akbar's Lakhi Bagh near Darbhanga in Bihar — an orchard said to have held about 100,000 mango trees. The name itself means "the orchard of a lakh", one hundred thousand. This figure comes from the historical accounts of the period rather than from a survey, and a round number of that kind in a court chronicle should be read as "enormous" rather than as a census. But the scale of Mughal orchard planting is not in doubt, and Lakhi Bagh is the standard illustration of it.
What made those orchards different from earlier ones was grafting. Because Indian mangoes are monoembryonic, seedlings do not reproduce the parent, and before grafting every superior tree was a one-off. Vegetative propagation changes everything: a good tree can be multiplied indefinitely, a variety becomes a stable, nameable, tradeable thing, and selection can compound generation after generation. Mughal-era horticulture applied grafting to mango systematically, and the result was the emergence of the named cultivars that still dominate Indian markets — Alphonso, Dasheri, Langra, Chausa, Kesar, Safeda and the rest. Some of those names carry their own origin stories: Dasheri is traditionally traced to a village of that name near Lucknow, and Langra — the word means "lame" — to a lame cultivator in Varanasi whose tree became famous. These are the kind of accounts that are widely repeated, plausible, and not independently documented.
The genetic evidence is consistent with a long history of clonal propagation. Studies of cultivar relatedness using microsatellite markers repeatedly find that the named Indian varieties sit within a relatively narrow genetic band — what you would expect from centuries of selecting and grafting within one pool rather than crossing broadly.
The Portuguese, Grafting in Goa, and the Alphonso
The Portuguese reached the Malabar coast in 1498 and established themselves at Goa in 1510. Their agricultural impact on Indian mango growing is usually summarised in one sentence — they introduced grafting — and the sentence needs a little care, because grafting as a technique was known in India well before that. What the Portuguese are credited with is the systematic application of their own grafting practice to mango in Goa, and, more importantly, the production of new named varieties from it.
The most famous product is the Alphonso, called Hapus in Marathi — still the highest-priced Indian mango and the one the export trade is built around. The name commemorates Afonso de Albuquerque, the Portuguese commander who took Goa in 1510 and who is the standard namesake given for the cultivar. The variety is associated with the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, particularly Ratnagiri and Devgad, and its reputation is founded on a genuinely distinctive combination: dense, non-fibrous, saffron-coloured flesh with a strong aroma and a short, unforgiving season.
The Portuguese also took the fruit the other way. Their trading network carried mango from India to East Africa, and onward to Brazil — the earliest firm foothold for mango in the Americas, established through Portuguese Atlantic shipping in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Because Portuguese ships were provisioned in Indian ports and their crews carried fruit, the movement of mango stones along those routes was continuous rather than a single event.
Out of Asia: Africa, the Manila Galleon, and the Americas
Mango's global spread happened along the trade routes of three empires, and each leg left a genetic signature that is still visible.
- Eastward within Asia. Mango moved into Southeast Asia early and independently of European contact, where the polyembryonic types took hold — the Carabao of the Philippines, Nam Dok Mai of Thailand, the Indonesian and Malaysian landraces. The genome resequencing work found these indigenous Southeast Asian varieties forming a group genuinely distinct from the India-linked commercial cluster, which is what you would expect from a long, separate cultivation history.
- The Manila galleon. From 1565 to 1815, Spanish ships ran annually between Manila and Acapulco, carrying Asian goods into New Spain. Mango travelled on that route — a stone survives a long voyage well — and this is the standard explanation for how mango reached Mexico and the Pacific coast of the Americas centuries before it reached Florida. Mexico's polyembryonic types, including the ancestry behind the small yellow ‘Ataulfo’ and Manila-type mangoes, trace to that Philippine connection.
- East and West Africa. Mango arrived on the Swahili coast through Indian Ocean trade and spread inland; the Portuguese carried it further. In much of tropical Africa it naturalised so thoroughly that it now functions as a village tree and a seasonal staple rather than as an introduced crop — which is exactly the context of the Gambian vitamin A trial discussed under Beta-Carotene and Vitamin A.
- The Caribbean. Mango reached Barbados, Jamaica and the wider West Indies in the eighteenth century and spread rapidly through the islands, where it likewise naturalised.
By the nineteenth century mango was growing on every continent with a suitable climate, but with two very different populations behind it: the monoembryonic Indian pool, propagated by grafting and rich in named cultivars, and the polyembryonic Southeast Asian pool, propagated by seed and spread by sailors.
Florida and the Modern Export Cultivars
Almost every mango sold in a Northern Hemisphere supermarket descends from a small Florida breeding episode, and the history of it is unusually well documented.
Mango was introduced to Florida in the nineteenth century, and the pivotal moment came with a cultivar called ‘Haden’, raised in Coconut Grove in the early twentieth century from a seed of the Indian variety ‘Mulgoba’. A paper in Economic Botany by Knight and Schnell traces the introduction of mango into Florida and the significance of the ‘Haden’ cultivar specifically to the modern industry — and significance is the right word. Haden was large, brilliantly blushed red, and it became the parent or grandparent of most of the cultivars the global trade now runs on: Tommy Atkins, Kent, Keitt, Palmer, Van Dyke.
It is worth being blunt about what those varieties were selected for. Tommy Atkins, the single most-traded mango in the world, is prized by shippers for a tough skin, resistance to bruising and anthracnose, a long shelf life and a striking red blush. It is not prized by anyone for flavour; it is comparatively fibrous and mild, and mango growers in India and Southeast Asia are frequently baffled that it is what the West thinks a mango tastes like. The Florida cultivars are a case study in what happens when a fruit is bred for a supply chain rather than for a table — the same story as the supermarket tomato and the Red Delicious apple.
The genetic consequence shows up in the data. Microsatellite studies of mango cultivars, and the resequencing in the genome paper, both find the commercial varieties clustering with Indian germplasm and showing allelic admixture — a small, related, much-crossed pool sitting on top of an enormous and largely unexploited reservoir of diversity in South and Southeast Asian landraces.
The Modern Industry: Volume Without Trade
Mango is, by volume, the most-produced tropical fruit in the world — ahead of pineapple, papaya and avocado — and the production figures are dominated by one country to a degree unusual for any crop.
India grows roughly half the world's mangoes. It also exports very little of them. The overwhelming majority of the Indian crop is eaten in India, and the export share is a small single-digit percentage of production. The reasons are structural rather than mysterious, and the Indian agricultural literature on export constraints has catalogued them: the best Indian varieties are highly perishable and have short seasons; cold-chain and packhouse infrastructure is uneven; and importing countries impose strict phytosanitary requirements for fruit fly, which mean approved hot-water, vapour-heat or irradiation treatment facilities and inspection protocols that many growers cannot access. The United States, Japan, Australia and the European Union each maintain their own conditions of entry.
The practical result is a global market whose volume is Indian and whose trade is not. Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Thailand and the Philippines supply a large share of internationally traded fruit, using varieties bred or selected for shipping. This is why a reader in London or Chicago is far more likely to have eaten a Tommy Atkins than an Alphonso, and why the Alphonso, when it does appear, arrives by air freight at a price that reflects it.
The mango-growing world also carries a substantial by-product problem. Peel and stone are a third to a half of the fruit's mass, and processing plants generate them by the megatonne — which is why the research literature on extracting polyphenols from mango waste has grown so quickly (see Mangiferin and Polyphenols).
Legends, Names, and What the Record Does Not Support
Mango attracts stories. Some are true, some are traditional, and some are simply wrong. Sorted:
- "The mango is the national fruit of India." True. It is also the national fruit of Pakistan and the Philippines, and the mango tree is the national tree of Bangladesh — four countries laying claim to the same species, which tells you something.
- "Akbar planted 100,000 mango trees at Lakhi Bagh." Traditional, from period accounts, and universally repeated. Read the number as the chroniclers' way of saying "on an imperial scale", not as an audited figure.
- "The Alphonso is named after a Portuguese general." This is the standard and widely accepted account — Afonso de Albuquerque, who took Goa in 1510. It is a naming tradition rather than a documented act of nomenclature, but it is not disputed.
- "The Portuguese invented grafting in India." Overstated. Grafting was known in India before them; their contribution was applying it to mango in Goa on a scale that produced new named varieties.
- "Alexander the Great brought mango to Europe." Not supported. Greek accounts of the Indian campaign describe remarkable trees, and mango may be among them, but mango was not established in Europe in antiquity — the climate does not allow it. Europe met the mango properly through the sixteenth-century Indian Ocean trade, and Europe still grows almost none.
- "Mango leaf tea cures diabetes." Not supported by any adequate human trial. Mango leaf is a real traditional remedy and mangiferin has genuine pharmacology, but the leap from that to a cure is not evidence. This is dealt with properly on the Mangiferin and Polyphenols page.
- "Mangoes are related to poison ivy." True, and unusually consequential for a piece of botanical trivia — see Urushiol, Allergy, and Safety.
One genuinely lovely fragment to end on: an Urdu couplet attributed to the poet Mirza Ghalib, who was famously devoted to mangoes, is said to have answered a friend's objection that even donkeys will not eat them with the observation that donkeys, indeed, do not. It is quoted in a dozen forms and is almost certainly polished in the retelling. Ghalib's letters do make his enthusiasm for the fruit entirely clear, which is the part that is documented.
