Fungal Infections
Systemic fungal infections are the overlooked group — often caught from soil, bird or bat droppings, or decaying plants, and frequently misdiagnosed for months as pneumonia or cancer. Most affect healthy people mildly and immunocompromised people severely.
- Aspergillosis — The mold in compost and grain that colonizes damaged lungs
- Histoplasmosis — The Ohio/Mississippi valley fungus from bird and bat droppings
- Blastomycosis — The Great Lakes soil fungus that mimics pneumonia and cancer
- Valley Fever — Coccidioides: the desert-dust fungus of the Southwest
- Cryptococcosis — The pigeon-dropping yeast with a taste for the brain
- Mucormycosis — The aggressive "black fungus" of uncontrolled diabetes
- Sporotrichosis — "Rose gardener's disease" from thorns and sphagnum moss
