Which Vervain? Untangling Verbena, Lemon Verbena and Blue Vervain

Most herbs have a name problem. Vervain has three, and they overlap in a way that makes the popular literature about it almost unreadable unless you sort them out first. The word "vervain" — and its cousin "verbena" — is currently attached to a scentless bitter European weed, a tall blue-flowered North American prairie plant, a lemon-scented South American shrub from a completely different genus, an ornamental bedding plant, a fragrance oil that often is not made from any of them, and a homeopathic-style flower essence that contains essentially no plant material at all.

This is not pedantry. It changes what the evidence says. The small human trial literature that gets quoted for "verbena" was almost entirely run on lemon verbena, a different genus. The sleep chemistry that gets quoted for "vervain" was worked out in Verbena officinalis. The one compound both share — verbascoside — is also in olive leaf, mullein and plantain, so it cannot tell them apart. Get the species wrong and you will confidently believe a thing that has never been tested.

Why the Name Matters More Here Than Usual

Every herbal page ought to name its species. On most pages that is housekeeping. Here it is the whole article, because the plants sharing the name are not close relatives and do not share a use.

Verbena officinalis and Verbena hastata are two species in one genus — genuinely related, chemically overlapping, traditionally used in broadly similar ways on two different continents. Aloysia citrodora is in the same family (Verbenaceae) but a different genus, smells strongly of lemon, and is grown and drunk for entirely different reasons. The fragrance-trade "verbena oil" is frequently Litsea cubeba, which is not even in the same family — it is in the laurels, with the avocado and the bay leaf. And the Bach flower "Vervain" is V. officinalis by origin but a dilution by preparation, which makes any claim about it a claim about a therapeutic system rather than about the plant.

So when you read "verbena has been shown to…", the first question is not whether the study was good. It is which plant was in the flask.

Common Vervain — Verbena officinalis

This is the plant this whole Benefits section is about, and the plant of the classical and medieval European record. It is a lanky, unimpressive perennial with wiry square stems, deeply cut lower leaves, and thin spikes of tiny pale lilac flowers that open a few at a time from the bottom up. It grows on roadsides and waste ground across Europe, western Asia and North Africa, and has naturalised widely elsewhere.

Two sensory facts identify it and are worth committing to memory:

  1. It is essentially scentless. There is a trace of volatile oil, but nothing you would call an aroma. If your dried herb smells of anything much, question the label.
  2. It is distinctly bitter. Not aromatic-bitter like wormwood; a flat, green, lingering bitterness. That bitterness is a large part of its traditional identity as a digestive and hepatic herb.

Its names in the old sources are grandiose out of all proportion to its appearance — herb of grace, holy herb, herba sacra, simpler's joy, enchanter's plant. It appears in Roman accounts of altar-cleansing and in medieval charm literature, and the ritual reputation is the reason it is still famous. It is history, not pharmacology, and the Vervain hub page covers that story.

What is actually studied in V. officinalis: the iridoid glycosides verbenalin and hastatoside, linked in animal work to non-REM sleep; the phenylethanoid verbascoside, which carries a very large in-vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory literature; rodent anxiolytic, sedative and anticonvulsant screens; topical anti-inflammatory work; and a role as one of five herbs in a European sinusitis combination product. That is the whole serious evidence base, and it is preclinical apart from the combination product. The chemistry page takes each of those apart.

Blue Vervain — Verbena hastata

Blue vervain is a North American species and a genuinely different plant with its own tradition. It is taller and far more conspicuous than common vervain — often chest height in damp meadows and ditches — with candelabra-like clusters of dense, upright spikes and flowers that are properly blue-violet rather than washed-out lilac. Where common vervain looks like a weed you would step over, blue vervain looks like something you would plant on purpose, and in fact it often is.

Its documented use runs through several Native American traditions and then through nineteenth-century Eclectic and Physiomedical American practice, where it appears as a nervine, a diaphoretic to push a fever, an expectorant, and — at larger doses — a frank emetic. That last point matters: a herb described in its own tradition as emetic in quantity is not a herb to treat as an unlimited daily tea, and it is a use that has no counterpart in the European vervain record.

The two species do share chemistry. Hastatoside takes its name from V. hastata, where it was first isolated, and was subsequently found in V. officinalis as well. Verbenalin occurs in both. That overlap is real and it is the strongest argument for treating them as loosely comparable — but "loosely comparable" is as far as it goes. Shared possession of two iridoids does not make two species interchangeable, any more than shared caffeine makes coffee and guarana the same drink. Total iridoid content, the flavonoid profile, the tannin load and the emetic threshold are not established as equivalent, and nobody has run the comparison that would settle it.

Practical consequence: American herb suppliers frequently sell "blue vervain" and European suppliers sell "vervain", and a reader comparing two websites is often comparing two species without being told. If a page cites the sleep-iridoid work to sell blue vervain, that citation has crossed a species boundary; say so rather than assume it is fine.

Lemon Verbena — Aloysia citrodora

Lemon verbena is the one most people have actually drunk. It is a woody, deciduous South American shrub — native to Argentina and Chile, widely grown in southern Europe, especially France, Spain and Morocco — with long narrow rough-textured leaves that release an intense, clean lemon-sherbet scent when bruised. In France it is verveine and it is the default after-dinner infusion; in Spain it is hierba luisa; in Morocco it goes into mint tea blends. If somebody hands you a cup of "verbena tea" in Europe, this is overwhelmingly what is in it.

Its botanical name has moved around, which adds a layer of confusion to an already confusing name. It has been published as Lippia citriodora and as Aloysia triphylla, and older papers — including most of the phytochemistry — use those names. Modern usage settles on Aloysia citrodora. When you search the literature you have to search all three or you will miss half of it.

Crucially, it is a different genus from vervain. Not a variety, not a subspecies, not a regional form — a separate genus with a separate chemistry dominated by a volatile oil rich in citral (geranial and neral), limonene and other terpenes, which is why it smells the way it does and why common vervain does not. Common vervain has no meaningful essential oil. That single difference means aromatherapy, culinary and volatile-oil findings for lemon verbena have no bearing on vervain whatsoever.

The overlap is at the polar end: lemon verbena is also a rich source of verbascoside, and commercial lemon verbena extracts are typically standardised to it. That shared compound is exactly what makes the two easy to conflate in marketing copy — and exactly why a verbascoside result cannot be used to distinguish them.

The Lemon Verbena Trials That Do Not Transfer

Here is the part that misleads people, and it is worth stating in the plainest possible terms.

Lemon verbena has a small human trial literature. Common vervain does not.

Standardised lemon verbena extracts have been through several small randomised, placebo-controlled trials, mostly conducted in Spain and mostly in the domain of exercise-induced oxidative stress, muscle damage and recovery, with additional small studies touching joint discomfort, mood and sleep-related outcomes. The trials are modest in size, the outcomes are largely biomarker-based, several were industry-funded, and taken together they support "plausible antioxidant effect in a specific stress model" rather than a treatment claim. That is a fair summary of a real, if thin, evidence base.

None of it applies to Verbena officinalis. The intervention was a different genus, standardised to a different total phytochemical profile, at extract doses far above what an infusion of any plant would deliver. Reading a lemon verbena recovery trial as support for vervain tea involves three separate leaps — species, preparation and dose — each of which is enough on its own to invalidate the inference.

The reverse also holds. The sleep-iridoid chemistry that makes vervain interesting is not lemon verbena's story. Lemon verbena's traditional reputation as a calming evening tea rests on its aroma and its palatability, and the strongest honest thing to say about it is that a warm, fragrant, caffeine-free drink at bedtime is a reasonable thing to enjoy.

The Other Things Called Vervain or Verbena

Beyond the big three, the name is attached to several more plants you may encounter:

  1. Purpletop vervain (Verbena bonariensis) — the tall, airy, purple-flowered garden favourite beloved of butterflies. Ornamental. Not a medicinal herb, not a substitute, and not studied as one.
  2. Garden verbena (Glandularia species, long sold as Verbena × hybrida) — the low, mounding bedding plant in trays at every garden centre. Taxonomically split out of Verbena in modern treatments. Purely decorative.
  3. "Verbena oil" in the fragrance trade — frequently distilled from Litsea cubeba (may chang), a Southeast Asian tree in the laurel family, because it is citral-rich and much cheaper than true lemon verbena oil. It is sometimes labelled "verbena" outright and sometimes "exotic verbena". True lemon verbena essential oil, by contrast, carries skin-sensitisation and phototoxicity concerns and is restricted in fragrance use. Either way, none of this touches common vervain, which yields almost no oil.
  4. Caribbean and Latin American "verbena" — in various local traditions the word attaches to Lippia and other Verbenaceae used for coughs, fevers and stomach complaints. Regional ethnobotany worth respecting on its own terms, not evidence about V. officinalis.
  5. Other Verbena species in herbal commerceV. littoralis, V. rigida and others appear in regional use and in the phytochemistry literature. Genus-level papers titled "the genus Verbena" often pool them, so a claim sourced to such a review may not rest on officinalis at all.

Bach Flower "Vervain" Is a Third Kind of Claim

Edward Bach's flower remedy system includes a remedy called Vervain, and it is prepared from Verbena officinalis. This causes a specific and avoidable confusion, so it is worth separating carefully.

Bach remedies are made by floating flowers in spring water in sunlight, then preserving the resulting water in brandy, and diluting again into stock and dosing bottles. The end product is water and alcohol with, at most, trace material. It is not a herbal extract in any pharmacological sense. Whatever one thinks of the system, a Bach Vervain bottle does not deliver verbenalin, hastatoside, verbascoside or tannins at any dose that could plausibly act.

The remedy is also not indicated the way a herb would be. In Bach's scheme the remedies map onto temperaments rather than symptoms, and Vervain is assigned to the over-enthusiastic, strong-willed, tightly-wound personality — the person who cannot stop campaigning. That is a description of a character type, not a physiological target.

On evidence: randomised placebo-controlled trials of Bach flower remedies, including test-anxiety trials, and the systematic reviews that pool them, have not found effects beyond placebo. That is a genuinely negative literature, not an absent one — a rarity on herbal pages and worth flagging as such.

The practical rule: a claim about Bach Vervain is a claim about the Bach system. It is neither support for nor evidence against vervain the herb, and the two should never be cited across.

Ma Bian Cao: The Same Plant, a Different Indication List

One more wrinkle, and this one is a species match with a use mismatch. Verbena officinalis is used in traditional Chinese medicine under the name ma bian cao ("horse whip grass", after the shape of the flower spike). So here the plant genuinely is the same — but the indications are not the European ones.

In the Chinese materia medica it is classified as bitter and cooling and used for patterns involving heat, damp and blood stasis, with historical application to malarial fevers, swelling and menstrual stasis, and it is explicitly noted as one to avoid in pregnancy. It is not primarily a nervine there. The European nervine identity and the Chinese blood-moving identity are two traditions that happen to share a plant.

Two consequences. First, Chinese-language pharmacology on ma bian cao is relevant to vervain in a way lemon verbena work is not — same species — but the endpoints chosen reflect the Chinese indications, so much of it addresses questions a European reader is not asking. Second, the pregnancy caution appears independently in both traditions, which strengthens it considerably; two unrelated bodies of practice arriving at the same warning is more persuasive than either alone. The safety page develops that.

How to Tell Which One You Actually Have

You can settle this in about ten seconds with your nose, and confirm it on the label.

  1. Smell it. Bright, unmistakable lemon means lemon verbena (Aloysia citrodora). Almost no smell means a true Verbena — common or blue vervain.
  2. Taste it. Common vervain is flatly, persistently bitter. Lemon verbena is aromatic and only faintly bitter. If a "vervain" tea tastes pleasant and lemony, it is not common vervain.
  3. Look at the cut herb. Lemon verbena dries to long, narrow, distinctly rough, pointed leaf pieces. Vervain dries to a mix of thin stem, small toothed leaf fragments and tiny flower spikes.
  4. Read the binomial, not the common name. Insist on Verbena officinalis, Verbena hastata or Aloysia citrodora (or its synonyms Lippia citriodora / Aloysia triphylla) printed on the package. A product that gives only "Vervain" or "Verbena" has told you nothing.
  5. Treat unlabelled bulk herb as unidentified. DNA-barcoding surveys of North American herbal products have found substitution and undeclared filler at rates high enough that "it says vervain on the jar" is not identification. This is not a vervain-specific scandal — it is a general finding about loose herbal commerce — but a herb with four plants sharing its name is exactly where it bites hardest.

What Transfers Between Them, and What Does Not

A compact summary you can apply to any claim you meet:

  1. V. officinalisV. hastata: partial. Shared iridoids make mechanistic reasoning reasonable. Dose, potency and the emetic threshold do not transfer. Label the leap.
  2. V. hastataV. officinalis: partial, same caveat. Hastatoside chemistry originating in blue vervain is fair to discuss for common vervain because the compound was later confirmed there.
  3. Aloysia citrodoraV. officinalis: no. Different genus, different dominant chemistry, different preparation. The human trials stay with lemon verbena.
  4. Verbascoside findings → any single plant: no. The compound occurs in olive, mullein, plantain, Rehmannia, Cistanche, lilac, Buddleja, lemon verbena and many more. A verbascoside result is a result about verbascoside.
  5. Five-herb sinusitis product → vervain alone: no. Vervain is one of five components in a formula designed to act together; single-component attribution is unsound.
  6. Bach Vervain ↔ vervain the herb: no, in both directions. Different intervention entirely.
  7. "Verbena oil" → anything: check the source plant first. It is often Litsea cubeba.
  8. Ethanolic or methanolic extract → a cup of tea: no. Water extracts iridoid glycosides and tannins reasonably well and triterpenes such as ursolic acid essentially not at all. A tincture and an infusion are chemically different products from the same plant.

What Is Missing

Stated as findings, because absence of data is a finding:

  1. No head-to-head chemical comparison of V. officinalis and V. hastata adequate to say whether they are therapeutically interchangeable. Everyone assumes; nobody has shown.
  2. No controlled human trial of V. officinalis alone for anxiety, sleep, digestion or anything else. The clinical literature under the word "verbena" belongs to another genus.
  3. No published survey of what is actually sold as "vervain" in Europe or North America, so the real-world substitution rate for this specific name is unknown.
  4. No agreed identity marker on labels. There is no requirement that a herbal tea state a binomial, which is why the confusion persists commercially.
  5. No verified iridoid content range we are willing to print. Reported verbenalin figures vary with plant part, harvest stage and assay, and we have not verified a primary range we would stand behind. A milligrams-per-cup number here would be a guess, so we are not giving one.
