Turmeric for Blood Sugar
Turmeric's case in blood sugar is indirect. The argument is that curcumin is anti-inflammatory, that inflammation contributes to insulin resistance, and that reducing the first should improve the second. Each step is defensible. The chain as a whole has never been demonstrated to produce a reliable change in anyone's HbA1c, and there is an absorption problem sitting underneath all of it.
Evidence tier 3: a plausible mechanism, weak and inconsistent direct glucose evidence.

The Evidence, Including a Retraction
Bahari and colleagues published a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis in Food Science & Nutrition in 2026 examining curcumin and turmeric supplementation for glycemic control in adults with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. That is the current reference point for anyone reading this literature.
There is also something important to know about the older literature. A widely-cited 2019 meta-analysis in PLoS One on curcumin and glycemic control has been RETRACTED. It is still findable, still cited in supplement marketing, and should not be used. This site checks citations against the source before publishing them precisely because a retracted paper reads exactly like a valid one at a distance — and this one was caught during the check that produced this page.
If you evaluate turmeric claims elsewhere, that retraction is a useful test: a page that still leans on the 2019 PLoS One analysis has not looked at its own sources recently.
The Bioavailability Problem
Curcumin is poorly absorbed, rapidly metabolised and quickly eliminated. Plasma concentrations after an ordinary oral dose are very low, which makes it genuinely difficult to attribute a systemic effect to the compound in the way cell-culture studies imply.
The standard workarounds — piperine from black pepper, phospholipid complexes, nanoparticle and micellar formulations — do raise measured plasma curcumin, sometimes substantially. What has not followed is a matching improvement in clinical glucose outcomes. Solving the absorption problem has so far produced better pharmacokinetics rather than better results, which is itself informative.
Where It Fits
Turmeric as a culinary spice is entirely reasonable and costs nothing: it belongs to cuisines built on legumes and vegetables, and there is no downside. As a supplement bought specifically to lower blood sugar, it is far down the list — behind berberine, fenugreek, and well behind the behavioural interventions that cost nothing at all.
Cautions
- It lowers blood glucose, and so does your medication. The effects add. With insulin or a sulfonylurea this is a hypoglycemia risk, and dose changes belong with the prescriber — see hypoglycemia awareness and prevention.
- High-dose curcumin supplements have been linked to liver injury. Cases cluster around enhanced-absorption formulations, which is a reminder that better bioavailability increases exposure to harms as well as benefits. See dangerous supplements.
- Antiplatelet effects at supplemental doses matter with anticoagulants and before surgery.
- It may worsen gallbladder pain by stimulating contraction; avoid with gallstones.
- Measure, do not assume. Adding a supplement without measuring means you learn about an interaction from a symptom rather than from a number.
