Most Benefits pages on this site organize around health claims — immune function, blood sugar, wound healing — because a single herb typically contributes one kind of material regardless of which part supplied it. Bombax ceiba is a genuine exception, and this page's structure follows the plant rather than a template.
Four parts, four separate traditions, four separate research bodies:
- Root (semal musli) — harvested from a young sapling, sold as a reproductive tonic. One controlled animal study.
- Stem bark — the mature trunk's bark, carrying the widest range of distinct pharmacological findings: blood pressure, bone, metabolic syndrome, antimicrobial screening.
- Gum (mochras) — resinous exudate from a bark wound, the classical astringent for diarrhea and bleeding. The thinnest research base of the four.
- Flower — both a real food and the most actively studied part, with recent work spanning metabolism, gut function and skin repair.
The clearest demonstration of why this separation matters is a genuine contradiction the research itself produced: gum carries a centuries-old astringent, anti-diarrheal (motility-slowing) tradition, while the flower's own 2023 and 2026 research shows the opposite — prokinetic, motility-promoting, gut-barrier-protective effects. Both can be true at once because they concern different parts with different chemistry. A sentence like "Bombax ceiba is good for the gut," stated without naming which part, is not simplified — it is meaningless, and potentially points a reader toward the wrong material for what they actually want.
A second demonstration is chemical rather than physiological: the leaf compound shamimin (1999, reported hypotensive and hypoglycemic activity in animals) and the bark compound shamiminol (2011, structure elucidation only, no bioactivity ever reported) differ by two letters in their name, were isolated by the same research group, and are entirely different molecules from entirely different parts. Citing one for the other's evidence would not be a simplification either — it would be wrong.
