Coriander Seeds for Blood Sugar

Coriander seed (Coriandrum sativum) appears on nearly every list of blood-sugar herbs, and it is the clearest example in this section of a reputation built almost entirely on animal and test-tube work.

Evidence tier 3: mechanism only. There is a plausible pathway and there is no adequate human glucose trial behind it.

What Actually Exists

Search the clinical literature for coriander and glycemic endpoints and what comes back is laboratory work: polyphenol characterisation, enzyme-inhibition assays, and rodent models. Mechchate and colleagues, for example, identified coriander seed polyphenols by LC-MS/MS and reported antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic properties — in a preclinical model. Torres-Vanda and Gutiérrez-Aguilar's 2023 systematic review of Mexican plants affecting glucose homeostasis included coriander among the small number of plants with supporting evidence, again largely preclinical.

What does not come back is a randomised controlled trial in people with diabetes measuring fasting glucose or HbA1c. That absence is the finding.

This should not be read as "coriander has been tested and failed." It has largely not been tested. The distinction matters: cinnamon has repeatedly disappointed under controlled conditions, which is real negative evidence, while coriander simply has not been put to the question. Both end up as "do not rely on it," for different reasons.

The Proposed Mechanism

The preclinical literature proposes several routes, none confirmed in humans: inhibition of α-glucosidase and α-amylase (slowing carbohydrate digestion), stimulation of insulin release from pancreatic beta cells, and antioxidant protection of those cells. The polyphenol and flavonoid content is the usual candidate.

These are the same mechanisms proposed for dozens of culinary plants, and that is worth noting: a plausible mechanism is very cheap. Almost every polyphenol-rich plant food inhibits α-glucosidase in a cuvette. Very few of them measurably change anyone's HbA1c.

How to Use It Sensibly

The sensible position on coriander is the one that costs nothing: use it as food. Ground coriander seed is a staple of Indian, Middle Eastern, Mexican and North African cooking, it is inexpensive, it has no toxicity at culinary doses, and the dishes it belongs to are often built on legumes and vegetables that do have real glycemic merit.

Buying a standardised coriander extract to treat blood sugar is not supported by anything in the human literature, and money spent there would do more work on any tier-1 entry in this section.

Cautions

  1. It lowers blood glucose, and so does your medication. The effects add. With insulin or a sulfonylurea this is a hypoglycemia risk, and dose changes belong with the prescriber — see hypoglycemia awareness and prevention.
  2. Allergy is the main real-world issue. Coriander belongs to the Apiaceae family alongside celery, carrot, fennel and dill; cross-reactivity happens.
  3. Measure, do not assume. Adding a supplement without measuring means you learn about an interaction from a symptom rather than from a number.
